HelpFAQ › Downloads

How do I download a layer?

  1. Add at least one free layer to a project by clicking "add to project".
  2. Define an area for your project: click the mini-map at top left, then click "set project area". Drag a box on the map for the area you wish to download.
  3. If your layers are all free, then you should be able to click a "Download" button. If one or more layers are commercial, then you'll need to purchase the geodata first.
  4. Choose a download type: CAD, GIS or Google Earth/KML.
  5. Choose a map projection (CAD or GIS only).
  6. Click 'Download Now'.

How long are downloads stored for?

Your previous downloads are stored under the 'You' menu when you're logged in, or you can click here. Your old downloads are stored for at least a month, but we will be shortening this period in the future.

What file formats can I download in?

You can download in:

  • CAD: DWG and GeoJPEG
All vector layers will be included in one DWG file. Image layers will be supplied separately as GeoJPEGs and embedded as linked objects within the DWG.
  • GIS: Shapefile and GeoJPEG
All layers will be supplied as separate shapefiles and GeoJPEG's.
  • KML / Google Earth
Note that Google Earth struggles to handle large and complex KML's. We're working to solve this problem.

Do you plan to support further download file formats?

Yes, we intend to support many popular file formats. However we don't publicly comment on when new file formats will become available.

How do you handle map projections?

When you download some geodata, Koordinates automatically calculates which map projections are suitable for your project area. They'll be offered to you in a drop-down list.

Your site doesn't support a map projection I need. Can you add it?

Sure. with more information about your map projection and we'll add it to Koordinates as soon as possible.
