HelpFAQ › Layers

What is a layer?

A Koordinates layer is some geodata, typically grouped by topic. Multiple layers can be combined into a map.

How do I buy a layer?

Add the layer to a project by clicking "Add to project". Click the project map which appears to specify the area you're interested in buying. You should be given quote and a "Buy" button. Click the buy button to purchase the layer using your credit card.

The quote will automatically update when you add and remove layers from the project, or change the project area.

What are the different pricing types?

Koordinates has four different pricing types:

  1. Free
    Free, as in free beer.
  2. Ha
This is the area pricing type, suitable for aerial photos, contour layers, and similar types of geodata. The cost of the layer will be limited to the "Per Ha" price multiplied by the number of Ha in the project area. Koordinates remembers when a user buys an area of a layer, and will not charge the user for that same area twice.
  3. Layer
The layer has a fixed price, regardless of how much you intend to use or download. Koordinates remembers when a user buys a layer, and will not charge the user for that layer again.
  4. Feature.
The user is charged per "feature" of the layer which lies within the project area. A feature could be a point or individual polygon or line. Koordinates remembers what features from a layer the user has purchased, and doesn't charge the user for those same features twice.

What do the different licenses mean?

Layers on Koordinates can have one of a variety of pre-defined licenses:

  • Creative Commons
Creative commons licenses are for "free" geodata. Read more about Creative Commons licenses at creativecommons.org.
  • Commercial Restricted
Covers a variety of use restrictions for commercial (priced) geodata.
  • Special licenses
Some large organisations making geodata available through Koordinates might have special license restrictions.
  • None specified.
The layer may have a license specified in it's description, or the license may not yet be known, or a license may not be relevant (e.g. for private layers).

Why do the layers sometimes not appear at certain zoom levels?

Google Maps prevents some layers showing at certain zoom levels if Google's own satellite layer isn't available at that zoom level.

How do I create my own layers?

All users can upload geodata to Koordinates. TBA...

Can I make a public layer private?
