Abstract:

This database (LCDB2) is a thematic classification of 43 land cover and land use classes. The polygon features contain a code and boundary representing the land cover type for the period Summer 1996 / 97 and Summer 2001 / 02.

Purpose:

The data set was designed to be compatible in scale and accuracy with Land Information New Zealands 1:50,000 topographic database. LCDB2 is intended to be used in areas such as state of environmental monitoring, forest and shrubland inventory, biodiversity assessment, trend analysis and infrastructure planning.

Supplemental_Information:

Satellite imagery was acquired between September 2001 and March 2002. Some cloud affected areas were infilled using aerial photography from Summer 2001 where this was not available, Landsat 7 ETM+ as recent as 31 December 2002 was used. LCDB2 is a representation of land cover for the New Zealand mainland, near-shore islands and Chatham Islands circa Summer 2001. LCDB2 was released in July 2004.This includes non temporal edits to LCDB1.

The database is released with an accuracy assessment completed for that part of the database covering Marlborough District. The full database may be assessed at a later date and Licensed Users provided with the results

The data set has been captured and is stored in digital ARC/INFO Coverage and ESRI SHAPEFILE format with an internal database structure storing the attribute data. The data has been built for polygon topology and has been checked for duplication and anomalies within the data.

The data set has completeness of classification, classification schema is exhaustive down to a 1 ha Minimum Mapping Unit (MMU), refer readme directory for Illustrated Guide to Target Classes for class definitions The data set has completeness of verification, all target classes have utilised ground data to inform supervised and manual image classification and the draft classification has undergone field verification, refer LCDB2 readme directory for description of field checking procedure.

Process_Description:

Both automated and visual interpretation was used to define the boundaries of the land cover classes from Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery pan sharpened to 15m spatial resolution with terrain normalisation. The boundaries were edited on screen directly into the ArcInfo coverage format. The satellite imagery was orthorectified to New Zealand Map Grid using photogrammetric software. Ground control points, used to position the imagery in the rectification process, were measured from aerial photography. Elevation models, used to correct distortion due to height, were generated at 15m from 20m contour data with an orthorectification target r.m.s.mapping error of 20m. Draft classification was field checked with additional ground data collected to produce final classification. Ancillary data such as digital topodata, aerial photography and published topomaps were used to assist in the interpretation of the imagery. Where cloud cover has obscured areas on the imagery aerial photography has been used to infill these areas. The minimum mapping unit for the data is 1 hectare. The imagery has being classified into 43 thematic classes.
