An introduction to our customers’ data services
To help you find the data you need, we thought we’d list the public data services from New Zealand on the Koordinates platform.
Over the last year, we’ve been busily working with government agencies and companies to help them publish their high-value data.
While some of this data is shared privately with staff and collaborators within organisations, an enormous — and growing — amount of data has been shared openly. We’re proud to say that, as of April 2017, there’s over 3000 datasets from New Zealand on the platform, totalling over 10TB, with a rapidly growing audience of over 40,000 users.
To help navigate the range of public sites on the Koordinates platform, we thought we’d put together a quick list:
New Zealand’s largest source of geospatial data, the LINZ Data Service is a useful place to find property data, high-resolution aerial photography, elevation, roads, hydrographic, and maritime data, as well as many other topographic layers.
The Stats NZ Data Finder provides meshblock datasets from the 2013 Census of Population and Dwellings and geographic boundary data.
The LRIS Portal is a service managed by Landcare Research. The LRIS portal hosts a range of land and soil datasets, and is especially useful for the Landcover Database and elevation data.
The MfE Data Service hosts a range of high-value data relating to New Zealand’s land, marine, air, climate and freshwater environment.
The GEOINT New Zealand Data Service hosts a range of data from the NZ Defence Force, focusing particularly on data from the Pacific region.
The Canterbury Maps data service provides access to data from local government agencies in the Canterbury region.
The University of Otago Geology Department publishes a small amount of data, mostly for research and educational purposes.
NZRS provide the Broadband Map, an excellent service that makes it easier for people to see the availability of broadband around New Zealand. Behind the scenes, NZRS use a Koordinates site to manage their data and populate the broadband map.
Koordinates hosts data published by several different government agencies, including Wellington City Council (WCC), the Department of Conservation (DOC) and NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). Alongside New Zealand data there’s also a growing index of public data from around the world.
We’ll keep updating this list as more sites launch and become public. Finally, if your organisation would benefit from a data service to publish data or a private site to manage data internally, get in touch, we’d love to find out how we could help.
