GDA2020 (Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020) is the latest Australian national datum for mapping. We have recently built support for GDA2020 into Koordinates as part of an upgrade to our projection handling. This ensures that we are hosting the most accurate and up-to-date information for you to work with... and for your customers to work on.
The new datum is higher-accuracy than GDA94, and aligns more closely with GPS and GNSS positioning. It supports nationally consistent datasets, free of the known distortions of GDA94. GDA2020 coordinates are shifted approximately 1.8 metres to the north east of GDA94 coordinates, representing the tectonic motion of the Australian plate between 1994 and 2020.
The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will be capable of providing location positioning services with centimetre accuracy. This will be available in real-time to the mass market on mobile devices. GDA2020 ensures the Australian datum is aligned to the global reference frame.
Incorporating this will mean that projects and research can be accurately aligned when applied to location data in Australia.
