Exporting Data

Following up on our design research blog last week, we’re excited to announce the first in a series of changes to over the coming weeks and months. First up is a new and improved way of downloading or ordering data.

Fundamentally, our aim with these changes is to simplify and streamline the workflows of users, to make it much easier for people to get data into their applications—and, ultimately, put that data to use in their projects. While the changes we’re making will make the site look a whole lot nicer, new users should also find the basic process of finding and exporting the data they need a whole lot more intuitive.

Exporting Data

While we were completing our user research, a lot of the feedback we heard was along the lines of “I really want to get the data as quickly as possible.” As we introduce more delivery methods and formats like the addition of PDF downloads we announced a couple of months ago, we’ve been reviewing how easy it is to access and export data from the platform. We thought the best place to start was with the data export process.

Previously the ‘Download and Order’ button created a small pop-up, which allowed you to pick the format and projection of your choice. For some users, this pop-up packed in quite a bit of information. While maintaining the range of export options—including the many different formats and projects—we’ve now made the export dialog full-screen, and updated its look and feel. Another change you’ll notice is we now provide a thumbnail image of the data and list items you’re exporting in cards. Taken together, we hope these changes make it easier for users to navigate through the various export options.

Once you've accepted your export, you'll be taken to a confirmation page that will summarise your order, and lets you know that you'll receive an email when your export is ready. This replaces the former ‘Export Status’ pop-up screen. For those who wish to track the progress of their export, we'll be adding in-app notifications later in the year.

Ordering Data

If you’ve been couriered data from us in the past, you’ll be pleased to know we’re also updating the ordering and account process. We’ve simplified the steps and forms required to place an order with Koordinates, which will make it easier to get the data you need. As more publishers add their data to the platform in the years ahead, this will enable us to manage subscriptions and commercial data sales—ensuring that you can get all the data you need in one place.

Billing Details

Behind the scenes we've been consolidating the way payments for commercial data, courier orders and subscriptions are made, into one easy-to-manage place. With the introduction of Koordinates ID earlier in the year, we’re now able to centralise these billing details.

With this new billing system we’ve archived your old invoices and statements. Links to your most recent purchases and downloads will still be available like they currently are, but if you need access to historical invoices you can check your email (we’ve always emailed you the invoice) or you can contact our support team. It’s important to note we don’t keep payment details in your account, but use an official payment provider to securely manage transactions for us.

We'll continue to iterate these new designs, and release updates in the coming weeks so we’d love to know what you think. Let us know on Twitter or get in touch via our contact page.
