Landcover Topo50

A subset of NationalMap consisting of a combination of landcover data extracted from the LINZ web portal.

The landcover data consists of the following types of cover:

  • Swamp: A wet or moist region with water standing on or just below the surface of the ground, and usually covered by a growth of vegetation
  • Ice: A region of permanent ice
  • Mud: An area of wet, soft earthy matter
  • Rock: Coastal rocks; rocks between high and low tide
  • Sand: Sand, crushed rock, shells etc. smaller than 2mm in size
  • Scree: Mountain slope covered with small stones
  • Shingle: Crushed rock, shells etc. larger than 2mm in size
  • Gravel pit: Area used for the extraction of coarse sand and small water-worn or pounded stones, used for paths and roads
  • Landfill: A portion of land on which refuse, solid or semi-solid waste, is dumped and then covered with earth
  • Moraine: An accumulation of boulders, stones or other debris carried and deposited by a glacier
  • Pumice: Area used for the extraction of pumice

This layer is a component of the Topo50 map series. The Topo50 map
series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, Chatham and New Zealand's offshore islands, at 1:50,000 scale. Further
