Ambient air monitoring data are provided to the EPA to meet federal requirements; communicate air quality to other levels of government, air monitoring professionals, researchers, medical professionals, and the public; and ensure that adequate air quality information is available for modifying planning, development, and personal behaviour.

Ambient air monitoring sites are geographic point locations with monitoring equipment, and possibly meteorological instruments, that monitor outdoor, near ground level criteria pollutant concentrations.
