This dataset was created to provide general characteristic and distribution information about soils within Glacier National Park, Montana. The soils of Glacier National Park were mapped in five stages between 1994 and 1999 as part of an on-going effort to complete a park-wide soil inventory. Generally, the soil inventory follows an Order 3 Soil Survey according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Cooperative Soil Survey Program standards. The survey also borrows from the U.S. Forest Service landtype system and the Canadian soil inventory program. This inventory was conducted at 1:24,000 scale. Map units are mostly complexes of two or more soils, but some are single-soil units (consociations). Delineations are as small as 1-10 acres, and as large as several thousand acres. This dataset was constructed largely using local soil scientists with experience in surrounding landscapes and should be considered a preliminary effort. It does not have the level of investigation, documentation, classification and quality control normal under the National Cooperative Soil Survey Program (NCSSP). Future work is expected to meet the criteria of the NCSSP.
