The enclosed shapefiles are an early release of a comprehensively
updated set of vectors for tracks, track junctions, and huts for
Egmont National Park.
The source of the data is a combination of tracing from the Taranaki
Regional Council 0.4m orthophotography, and handheld GPS surveying
carried out in the first quarter of 2015. The orthophotography was flown in
2011, and carries a nominal accuracy of 2.5m @ 90%. The GPS work was all
carried out using an Garmin Etrex 20, making sufficient passes to achieve
a nominal accuracy of 5m at 90% confidence.
Because features were surveyed during the same time period, using the
same processes throughout, the resulting dataset is potentially a big
leap forward in geospatial data for the park.
A companion set of digital photos is also available documenting all track
intersections and signage. Further examination of the photography will
ensure complete feature naming consistency, between facility signage
and mapping.
The existing topo50 data for these datasets were found to be
generally in the vicinity of 50m accuracy @ 50%, however there are outliers
out to 650m. It is intended that this new dataset will be adopted by
LINZ for inclusion in the next topo50 release, and hence
appear on both paper and digital maps into the future.
This preliminary release is to seek feedback by stakeholders
particularly with regards to feature naming.
