The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the Federal standard for geographic nomenclature. The U.S. Geological Survey developed the GNIS for the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, a Federal inter-agency body chartered by public law to maintain uniform feature name usage throughout the Government and to promulgate standard names to the public. The GNIS is the official repository of domestic geographic names data; the official vehicle for geographic names use by all departments of the Federal Government; and the source for applying geographic names to Federal electronic and printed products of all types.

The original source for these data is Geonames, the ORGNIS dataset contains only features located in Oregon. Minimal processing of data downloaded from the GNIS repository was performed by the Oregon Geospatial Enterprise Office, these changes are documented in the last process step in the metadata.

Purpose

The Geographic Names Information System contains information about physical and cultural geographic features of all types in the United States, associated areas, and Antarctica, current and historical, but not including roads and highways. The database holds the Federally recognized name of each feature and defines the feature location by state, county, USGS topographic map, and geographic coordinates. Other attributes include names or spellings other than the official name, feature designations, feature classification, historical and descriptive information, and for some categories the geometric boundaries. The database assigns a unique, permanent feature identifier, the Feature ID, as a standard Federal key for accessing, integrating, or reconciling feature data from multiple data sets. The GNIS collects data from a broad program of partnerships with Federal, State, and local government agencies and other authorized contributors. The GNIS provides data to all levels of government and to the public, as well as to numerous applications through a web query site, web map and feature services, file download services, and customized files upon request.

Nevada Place Names and Locations (1999)

Nevada Places.

The source data were downloaded in late 1999 from the U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), and nominally represent all named features on 1:24,000 (or largest available scale) U.S.G.S. topographic maps in Nevada. See the GNIS online metadata for further information on scope, origin, and production. Feature coordinates were used with ArcView® to create a corresponding shapefile. Attribute fields representing location data already available to us as separate GIS data sets (such as map quadrangles, counties, etc.), or representing other data that we had no need or ability to interpret or use, were removed for compactness. A single field (see CLASS below) was then added and populated to provide a higher level of classification for the feature types included, to facilitate representation on map legends and other data uses.

Approximate locations in telephone central offices in Ohio. Created by converting telephone VH coordinates into latitude and longitude Updated 12/07 to add a new field CO_NAME_NEW, which is a duplicate of CO_NAME, except for renaming/differentiating those CO's that had duplicate names. This was accomplished by using Ameritech's and Verizon's spreadsheets from census calculations, and looking at TELCODATA's data, as well as looking at marigold.com. Additional documentation available from N. Perini (NOTE: Removed duplicate Chesterfield, Maria Stein, Morning Sun, North Canton and Northfield points.

New York City Neighbourhood Centroids (June 2009)

These points were created as a guide to the locations of neighborhood labels found on the Department of City Planning's "New York: A City of Neighborhoods" poster and webpage. Best estimates of label centroids were established at a 1:1,000 scale, but are ideally viewed at a 1:50,000 scale.

Beach Access Points and Boat Ramps

The beach access points theme was created to display the location of public beach access along the Oregon Coast. Boat ramp locations were added to the dataset to allow users to view the location of boat ramps along the Columbia River and the Willamete River north of the Oregon City Dam.

Purpose

The theme allows the user to locate and extract information on various beach access locations. The information includes approximate geographic location and attributes defining the development level of the site.
